RPS vs DD Results and Highlights
RPS players celebrate the fall of De Kock’s wicket

The Match 49 of the IPL saw the Rising Pune Supergiants take on Delhi Daredevils at Visakhapatnam. It was going to be a crucial encounter for DD in the quest for top four spots. RPS were already out of the race, but DD was well in with a chance even for a top two finish having three games in hand.

RPS had defeated DD earlier in the league to secure one of their three victories so far. They were able to chase DD’s first innings score of 162 comfortably. Ajinkya Rahane played a sublime hand of 63 as he has done quite a few times for RPS this season. The repeat of the similar performance can ruin the party for DD in the league.

RPS were in a nothing to lose but all to gain situation. They might have failed in this league but it was an opportunity for them to chance out the players who had been warming the benches thus far. They might be out of contention for the playoffs but they still had the potential to defeat any team. DD had to be cautious as one more bad defeat could cost them a golden opportunity to make it the playoffs.

Rising Pune Supergiants won the toss and elected to field first

Rising Pune Supergiants:

Ajinkya Rahane, Usman Khawaja, George Bailey, Saurabh Tiwary, MS Dhoni(c/wk), Thisara Perera, Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Adam Zampa, Ashok Dinda, Deepak Chahar

Dinda’s pace ruffled the feathers of DD

Ashok Dinda began with a fiery spell of pace bowling and perturbed the DD openers. He gave away just 2 runs in the first over and came back to trap de Kock in front of the wickets with an in-swinger. The second over turned out to be a wicket maiden, a rare sight in T20 cricket. Then he dismissed the other opener Shreyas Iyer off a quick bouncer. He then had figures of 12/2 in 3 overs which left DD suffering at 25/2 as powerplay ended.

Zampa’s turn to spread the magic

It was getting very difficult for the batsmen to recover from the early losses. Karun Nair and Sanju Samson battled hard to tackle the bowlers and added 24 runs for the third wicket. Then, arrived the leggie Adam Zampa into the attack. He continued his great form with the ball and got Samson out stumped for 10 in the 10th over. Soon, he sent Rishabh Pant back in the 13th over for just 4. RPS were reeling at that stage at 62/4 with only 7 overs to play.

Disciplined RPS restricted DD to 121

Zampa went on to pick his third wicket as he got Karun Nair out LBW for 41. R Ashwin also supported him well from the other end as he went for under 6 runs an over. Dinda came back to pick up his 3rd wicket and trapped the big fish JP Duminy for run a ball 14. Chris Morris then smashed 22 runs off the last over from Perera with 2 sixes and 2 fours to give the bowlers something to bowl at.

It was a great bowling effort from RPS to restrict the score to 121. Dinda and Zampa bagged 3 wickets each. They were well backed up by R Ashwin and Irfan Pathan who helped to keep a check on the run-rate. Karun Nair was the top scorer with 41 runs and then some late blows from Morris aided the team to some sort of a total.

A smooth start for RPS despite a wicket

Chasing a small total, RPS got off to a mild start. Usman Khawaja and Ajinkya Rahane looked quite comfortable on a difficult track. Khawaja smashed 3 boundaries in the third over bowled by Zaheer due to which the score raced off to 30. But in the next over, Khawaja couldn’t keep a drive on the ground off Morris and sent the bowl straight to the backward point fielder who grasped it easily. George Bailey then joined Rahane in the middle and both took RPS safely to 44/1 at the end of the powerplay.

Rain played spoilsport

As the innings reached the 9th over and RPS were 57/1, the rain stopped play and the players were forced to leave the field. RPS were 15 runs ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par score at that stage. But soon the rain relented and after an hour, the play resumed and no overs were reduced. Rahane and Bailey continued their partnership with ease. But just 14 balls were in and the rain came back. The players had to leave the field again. This time, RPS were 19 runs ahead of the D/L score.

Rain had the last laugh

This time, there was no resumption as the rain refused to ease off. RPS were ahead of the D/L par score which meant that they won the game by 19 runs by the D/L method.

The victory would be credited to the efforts of the RPS bowlers. They were magnificent in stopping DD to just 121. It was always going to be difficult to defend such a low total. A disappointing result for DD, it made the road to the playoffs difficult for them. RPS gain 2 points and were lifted from the bottom to move ahead of KXIP to the number 7 spot. DD remained at number 6 with two games in hand.

Match Result:

DD 121/6 (20 overs) Nair 41, Dinda 20/3, Zampa 21/3

RPS 76/1 (11 overs) Rahane 42*, Khawaja 19, Morris 12/1

RPS won by 19 runs (D/L method)

MOM: Ashok Dinda
