S Badrinath to play and captain Hyderabad in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season

Domestic stalwart Subramaniam Badrinath will be part of the Hyderabad setup during the upcoming Ranji Trophy season and will also lead the side during the campaign.

“I will be with Hyderabad next season. The approach was made by Hyderabad Cricket Association president Arshad Ayub.

“They wanted a senior cricketer to not just contribute on the field but guide the youngsters,” Badrinath told The Hindu.

“I have some more years of first class cricket left in me. I wanted to be involved full time as a cricketer. I am still very fit,” he added.

The 36-year-old had received a No-Objection Certificate from Vidarbha, where he had spent two seasons, and was also in the reckoning for taking up the role of a batting coach with his home state Tamil Nadu with new coach of the state Hrishikesh Kanitkar and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association(TNCA), looking to make full use of his experience.

Badrinath has been one of the most prolific run-getters in the Indian domestic scene, having amassed 9778 runs in 136 matches ever since making his debut in the 2000-01 season.

He made his Test debut for India against South Africa in Nagpur in 2010, scoring a patient 56 in the first innings. He made his ODI debut for India in 2008 against Sri Lanka and combated the turn of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis very well to score 27 and lead India to a win in a low-scoring affair.

He last played for India in the West Indies in 2011.
