Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has said that he will take a decision on whether to continue playing international cricket after returning back to his country and will take ‘4 or 5 days ‘ to take a final call on his international career.
“When I go back home, in the first 4-5 days I will make the decision[on the retirement]. I will announce it in my country.Whatever is better for the country, I will go with that. I will see my form. There is pressure, media pressure. As a player, I am fit. As a captain, I am not fit,” he told Michael Slater in the post-match press conference.
The all-rounder also thanked the people of Kolkata and his home country and like he did after the game against New Zealand, once again thanked the people of Kashmir as well.
“I have enjoyed my captaincy. The team management, selection committee and Shahryar Khan have helped me out. I want to thank people from Calcutta. I thank people who came and supported us from Pakistan and Kashmir. Thanks to the BCCI.,” Afridi said.
Earlier in the day, Afridi had said during the toss that he would take the decision on his retirement after getting back to his country.
Waqar maintains a diplomatic stand
Following his side’s loss on Friday, Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis also maintained a diplomatic stand, when asked whether Afridi was going to retire from international cricket.
“I think what I've heard is Afridi is going to do a press conference in Pakistan and then decide what his future plans are,” Waqar said.
There were reports of there being a rift within the squad, but Waqar squashed all those talks.
“The talks about there is a rift in the team is not true. I think we just didn't play good enough cricket,” the former fast bowler turned coach said.
