Sri Lanka Premier League 2013 edition set to be cancelled

Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to cancel the Sri Lanka Premier League for the year 2013.

Citing problems of lack of funds and due to investor disinterest in the franchises, the SLC has no other option but to shut down the league.

This situation is sure to hurt the already cash deprived SLC as the SLPL had brought in profits to the tune of Rs. 289 million during the previous edition.

In an emergency meeting held between SLC and Somerset Entertainment Ventures (SEV), who are the organizers of the tournament, all possibilities a continuation were ruled out.

SLPL had set 12 noon as the deadline yesterday for franchises to deposit their amounts and also guarantee payments to the players. But no franchise had met this deadline.

It may be remembered that SLC had cancelled the three Test tour of South Africa so as to accommodate the SLPL, making these developments all the more unfortunate for the island nation.
