Stats: Hashim Amla becomes the fastest to reach 6000 ODI runs

Amla reached the 6000-run landmark in his 123^rd ODI innings, eclipsing Kohli’s previous record by 13 innings

South African opening batsman Hashim Amla, playing his 123^rd ODI innings, became the quickest to reach the landmark of 6000 ODI runs beating the previous record held by Virat Kohli. Amla, who started the 5^th ODI that is currently underway in Mumbai 15 runs short of the landmark, scored the required runs at a quick pace and looked in threatening form before he was snapped up by Mohit Sharma for 23.

Coming into the five-match ODI series against India 81 runs short of the 6000-run mark, Amla would have been hoping to reach the landmark even quicker but a bad run of form meant the 32-year-old had to wait till the final match of the series. Still, Amla eclipsed Kohli’s record by 13 innings and by 18 in terms of matches played.

Amla also holds the record of being the quickest to reach the landmarks of 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 runs in One-Day International cricket.

The top 10 list is dominated by South Africa with as many as four players from the African nation making the list. De Villiers joins Amla and Kohli as the third player in the ongoing ODI that is present in the list while former Protea openers Graeme Smith and Gary Kirsten also features.

The only Indian apart from Kohli that makes an appearance is former skipper Sourav Ganguly who reached the landmark in his 147^th innings, the same as De Villiers.
