Most successful ODI teams since 2011 World Cup: What the stats say

With the 2015 World Cup fast approaching, teams are taking stock of their squads to start the preparations for for the global event in Australia and New Zealand next year.

India are the defending champions, having so famously lifted the Cup at home in Mumbai on 2nd April 2011. Since then, there have been a total of 376 ODIs played, more than 166,000 runs scored and 5000+ wickets taken in this format.

Sri Lanka have played the most matches among all teams, featuring in 99 ODIs since losing the World Cup final.

With 86 ODIs, India have been the second most frequent participant in ODI cricket. Pakistan’s position at number 3 confirms the sub-continent’s love with the format.

Despite their Test humiliations since winning the World Cup, India have maintained a stronghold in ODIs, even winning the Champions Trophy in England last year. Their tally of 50 wins is the highest, closely followed by Sri Lanka’s 49 ODI victories.

India’s number of ODI wins is not the only indicator of their dominance. Despite the volume of ODI cricket being played by the sub-continent teams, India have still maintained the highest win/loss ratio in the world (1.72).

Away from home record

The refusal of teams to tour Pakistan means that they have to play all their matches away from home, resulting in their tally of 78 ODIs as the highest played by any team since 2011 World Cup away from home. Sri Lanka (63) and India (59) too have been on the road in this duration, being the 2nd and 3rd most travelled teams for ODIs.

But the most success on foreign territory has been garnered by South Africa (albeit with a less number of ODIs played), who won 20 of their 33 ODIs away from home. India, despite having played the 3rd highest number of away ODIs, is the 2nd most successful team outside their fortress, having won 32 of the 59 matches they’ve played so far.

Home record

At home, India have the best record among all teams in the world. Of the 27 matches played in India, they’ve won 18 and lost 8. However, they’re not the team to have played at home the most, with England leading in that department with 41 matches since 2011 World Cup. England were the host for Champions Trophy in 2011.

West Indies (39) and Sri Lanka (36) were the next most frequest hosts in this period.

India’s dominance at home is closely replicated by Australia, who won 17 of their 26 ODIs at home.
