In May, Sussex and Somerset met at Horsham to do battle in the LV County Championship. Sussex were victorious after Steve Magoffin ripped through the Somerset batters as he ended with match figures of 12-31.

Earlier this week, the sides met again in the LV County Championship at Taunton. Somerset batted first and were all out for an average 244 with James Hildreth top-scoring with 66. Both openers Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton were out for nought.

In reply, Sussex mounted up 363 with Michael Yardy and Matt Machan the stars as they scored 156 and 103 respectively. This put Sussex in a strong position with a lead of 119.

Somerset came out with a challenge on their hands and to my delight they didn’t do all that well as they were bowled out for 209. James Anyon and Magoffin both taking 4 wickets to put Sussex in a winning position.

So Sussex needed 91 runs to win the match. Luke Wells and Chris Nash set about their business well and quickly got the runs on the board. Wells was out with 40 runs on the board, but there was nothing to fear as Nash pushed on well and was smashing boundaries all around the park. Yardy calmly kept his head and supported him well. The pair got Sussex over the line, needing just 19.4 overs to reach the required target.

This emphatic win propels Sussex back up to the top of the table with 140 points and their next game in the LVCC sees them face Middlesex at home.
