Top 10 run-getters in Test Cricket in 2015

Steven Smith had a remarkable year in Test cricket

Australian captain Steven Smith, who won the ICC Cricketer of the year and the ICC Test cricketer of the year awards, couldn’t have asked for anything more as he finished 2015 as the leading run-scorer in Test cricket with 1474 runs at an average of nearly 74.

Smith’s achievement requires special mention because he was handed the captaincy role at a time when Australia were humbled in the Ashes and Michael Clarke had announced his retirement.

He valiantly led from the front and many a times also anchored the Aussie batting. He enjoyed his dual role as captain and as an important batsman, thus maintaining the formidable tag of his team.

Along with Smith, another youngster who impressed in the Test format in 2015 was New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson. The 25-year-old averaged more than 90 in Test cricket and was also the only cricketer to feature in both Test and ODI top 10.

Smith’s teammates David Warner and Adam Voges too were part of the top 10, due to their remarkable performances in the longer format of the game. Voges, who made his debut in 2015, especially impressed everyone with his batting against the West Indies side.

England captain Alastair Cook yet again had a wonderful year in Test cricket, scoring heavily and also inspiring his team to win the Ashes. He hit a mammoth 263 against Pakistan in the UAE and is quickly closing in on the 10,000 run mark in Test. The 31-year-old has already 28 hundreds to his name thus far. Cook was the second highest run-scorer for England in Tests after Joe Root.

The list also featured 3 Sri Lankan batsmen – Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne. As with the ODI list, no Indian featured among the top 10 run-getters in Test cricket, despite a dream season. The final mention in the list was retired Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan, who had amassed 789 runs at an average of 61.
