Umpire Cam makes its debut in IPL 7

Big Bash League - Renegades v Stars

Umpire cams have been used in BBL

Sports broadcasting all over the world is undergoing some huge changes with the focus increasingly being shifted towards enhancing the viewer’s experience and bringing them as close as possible to the action on-field. The telecast of the inaugural match of the 7th edition of the Indian Premier League between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders took another step towards enriching the experience of the audience at home by adding cameras on top of the caps of the on-field umpires.

As the umpires came out yesterday, everyone could see a strap running across their shoulders and a small camera fitted onto their hat. The camera is held in place on the top of the cap by a clip and is connected to a battery pack on the umpire’s back.

The strap on the umpire’s shoulders help to conceal the wires which connect the wires from the camera to the battery pack and a radio relay which transmits the videos back to the production room from where it is beamed across the world.

These cameras on the hat are the third generation of the 3rd Eye Cams following the sunglasses and the helmet cams which were seen in action in the Big Bash League in Australia.

With other innovative features such as the spider cam, stump-cam and he super slo-mo cam, these new cameras will ensure that the user gets to watch a piece of the actions from all angles around the ground. As the saying goes, the more the merrier!
