Ireland became the first Associate nation to qualify for cricket’s 2014 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday (9th July) after a dramatic tie with the Netherlands in Amstelveen proved to be enough for William Porterfield’s side to win the 2011-13 ICC World Cricket League Championship competition and claim one of the two automatic places on offer.
Ireland are the first associate nation to qualify for the 2015 ODI World Cup following a dramatic tie with the Netherlands in Amstelveen on Tuesday.
Michael Rippon needed seven off the final ball to win the match for the Dutch and he did hit it over the ropes but the ball was good and the sides shared a point a piece.
However, Ireland had done just enough to make it to their third consecutive World Cup, having moved on to an unassailable 20 points in the World Cricket League Championship table but captain William Porterfield wasn’t exactly ecstatic.
William Porterfield, Ireland captain:“Strange, at the minute. It’s… you come off almost feeling like it’s a bit of a loss, because coming down the last couple of overs we felt like we almost had it in the bag,” Porterfield said, adding, “But yeah, I think we’ve done really well to claw it back. I think it’ll take… it won’t take us that long to get over the fact that we’ve just drawn the game, because we’ve just qualified for the World Cup. We just wanted to do (it) with a win, but now we’ll be pretty happy.”
With Ireland through, the second qualification slot for the World Cup is still open, with the Netherlands, Scotland and Afghanistan all still in with a chance of claiming it.
