Video: Spectator pockets $5000 NZD taking a spectacular catch

In a Georgie Pie Super Smash 2014 match between Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds at Hamilton, New Zealand, a spectator named Andrew McCulloch took a stunning one-handed catch to take home $5000 New Zealand Dollars (NZD), which is about 2.4 lakhs in Indian rupees. Michael Bracewell, a left-handed batsman, smashed off-spinner Jeetan Patel over deep mid-wicket; McCulloch, sensing the chance, came down to grab it and eventually succeeded in doing so despite slipping.

The cash award is a part of Northern Knights’ promotional offer, which allows spectators catching the ball one-handed beyond the boundary to win the huge sum.

Watch the video here. This is one catch that definitely deserves a cash prize anyway:

Batting first, the Firebirds, riding on a 80-run second-wicket partnership between Jesse Ryder and Bracewell, scored 169 in 20 overs. However, their bowling unit wasn’t good enough to restrict the Volts, who chased it down 19.4 overs, courtesy of attacking knocks from Grant Elliott and Jeetan Patel, who scored 43 off 24 and 34* off 14 respectively.

The failure of the Firebirds’ strike bowlers Dirk Nannes and Jacob Duffy, who both combined to concede 86 runs in 7.4 overs, proved to be the undoing of the team

It gets bigger

What makes it even more amazing is that the batsman, Bracewell turns out to be the brother of McCulloch’s partner, which he admits in this video. Seems to be ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for the pair, who have only recently returned home from an overseas stint and are tired of paying credit card bills.
