Virat Kohli's 114-ball 127 against West Indies: Statistical highlights

Playing his 133rd One Day International (ODI) innings yesterday, against the West Indies at the HPCA stadium, Dharmasala, Virat Kohli became the fastest to reach 20 ODI hundreds when he scored a 114-ball 127, breaking Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record of reaching the feat in 197 innings.

Kohli is also only the 8th cricketer to score 20 ODI tons or more, with the other 7 being Tendulkar (49), Ricky Ponting (30), Sanath Jayasuriya (28), Sourav Ganguly (22), Herschelle Gibbs (21), Chris Gayle (21) and Saeed Anwar (20).

The 25-year-old’s 127 is now the highest individual ODI score at the HPCA, breaking England batsman Ian Bell’s 113 against India in 2013.

What is even more surprising is that despite not being in the greatest of forms this year, Kohli is only second to Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara in the list of leading run-scorers in ODIs this year. The Delhi lad has scored 725 runs in 16 matches as compared to Sangakkara’s 728 in 18 games.

For a minimum of 500 ODI runs scored against an international team, Kohli averages 50 against 5 teams, only second-best to former Australian cricketer Michael Bevan, who averages 50+ against 6 teams.

For a minimum of 50 innings played, Kohli and Bevan are the only two players who average 50+ in ODIs both at home and away.

In home ODIs, there are 8 players who average 50+ in ODIs (for a minimum of 50 innings played): Kohli, Bevan, MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamamu-ul-Haq, Ajay Jadeja and Lance Klusener.

The Delhi lad is only the fifth batsman to hit 3 ODI hundreds this year; the four other are Faf du Plessis, Aaron Finch, Hashim Amla and Sangakkara.

Kohli now has 5879 runs in 141 matches at an average of 51.57 and a strike-rate of 89.85. He has 31 fifties to his name, as well.
