Vizag cricketer bats to break Guinness Record for longest individual net session

Nagaruju Budumuru in Vishakhapatnam, aiming for an unprecedented mark

23-year-old Vizag-based cricketer Nagaraju Budumuru has embarked on a special quest since Thursday morning – attempting to bat for a net session lasting 82 hours, which is scheduled to get over on Sunday evening, according to Deccan Chronicle.

Nagaruju has been facing deliveries from bowling machines as well as actual bowlers on way to this herculean task. This attempted world record, which will beat the previously existing mark by almost double, is being played out at the A.S. Raja College Ground, MVP Colony, Vishakhapatnam.

The bowling has to be at a consistent rate according to rules stipulated by Guinness, and so the amateur cricketer is taking 20-minute breaks to re-energise with liquids after uninterrupted 5-hour sessions of facing balls.

Want to see name in record books: Nagaruju

He is attempting to break the record of 50 hours set by Pune-based amateur cricketer Virag Mare, who did a similar wonder in December last year. This is a record requiring immense strength of mind and body, as well as an unmatched passion for the sport, but there have been a spurt of cricketers trying this feat in recent years.

“I want to see my name in the Guinness Record, Limca Book of Records, World Records Academy International, Wonder Book of Records International, Genius Book of Records and Asia Book of Records in the longest individual net session of 82 hours,” Nagaruju said.

Mare had faced almost 15,000 balls on way to his epic record. According to the target set by Nagaruju, he needs to face almost 25,000 deliveries.

What motivates cricketers like Mare and Nagaruju to embark upon such feats is an open question.
