Who said What: Australia win first ever Day/Night Test match after tight finish under floodlights

New Zealand players stand in the field during the last over of day three

Australia defeated New Zealand in the first ever day-night Test match by 3 wickets in Adelaide and won the Trans-Tasman series 2-0. The match finished on the third day with a total of 12 wickets falling on the final day of the match.

A summary of reactions in the aftermath of the historic tie –

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum: “We witnessed a great game of cricket and the crowd support was also great. We were two balls away from being back in the game.

“It's unfortunate that the Lyon dismissal had a bearing on the game, but we can't take away the win from Australia because they batted really well after that. Boult was outstanding for us.”

Australia captain Steve Smith: “What an amazing game of cricket! I think it's been great, a bit different to the first two Tests that were dominated by the bat. The bowlers enjoyed bowling under lights. Starc has been hitting the ball extremely well too.

“It was good to see Shaun (Marsh) scoring those runs, both the brothers also did put a good little partnership.”

Man of the Match Josh Hazlewood (9 wickets in the match): “The ball definitely did a lot more in the night. The crowd was excellent and they surely enjoyed it. It was more enjoyable to bowl in the night. The grass on the wicket also helped.”

Man of the Series David Warner (592 runs in 3 matches): “It's quite challenging to bat here. But if we go two Tests back, the wickets were batting friendly.

“It was quite nerve wracking there towards the end. New Zealand fought hard. I think it's about backing myself and keeping things simple. I sometimes might get out playing those shots, but that's the way I play.”

Shaun Marsh: "It was tough work. Players had to work really hard to get to 180 odd. They didn't make it easy for us and the ball started to swing a bit more under lights. Still a bit of work today, happy that we got over the line.”

Mitch Marsh: "I was trying to hang around and get the runs quickly. Yeah! Unfortunately, it didn't come off. It was very frustrating to see Shaun getting out in that fashion. Would have been nice had he been there till the end.”

Trent Boult: "It was incredible to be honest (on the D/N Test match experience) . The amount of people and what we have gone through. It's a shame we couldn't win. Anything was going to be difficult to chase with our bowling attack and the plans.”

Peter Nevill: "I did get out, unfortunately. But, great to see the boys get us over the line. It was a wonderful occasion (to be a part of day-night Test match).

“He's (Starc) a tough character. He had a broken foot and that vital runs he made in the first innings proved to be very crucial.”

Peter Siddle: Starcy is a tough character and he plays with a lot of commitment. He had an injury in his foot and to come out and bat there it was fantastic. Credit to our batters for digging in and getting us closer to the target. Yeah coming into this game, my mum wasn't well but she will be proud about my achievement (on claiming his 200th Test wicket)."
