Police opened fire on Sunday morning at a vehicle that tried to go through barricades preventing access to an area between the Place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysees, where the Tour de France will end, officials said.

The driver was probably drunk and the incident was likely not terrorist-related, the officials said, reports Efe.

The dark-coloured vehicle tried to go through the barricades around 8:00 a.m., but the location near the finish line of the Tour de France appears to have just been a coincidence.

Officers ordered the vehicle to stop and fired at the driver when he failed to stop. The driver was not hit and fled from the scene, officials said.

The car hit another vehicle before the shooting.

The Tour de France will end around 5:00 p.m. with the sprint in Paris, where Chris Froome is about to become the first Briton to win the world's most famous cycling competition twice.
