Thief 2014: Game Review, features and requirements

Garrett serves as the main character of the game

The month of February saw the release of the long awaited Thief 2014 under leading game developers Eidos Montreal. After a hiatus of nearly a decade, the cult classic series was revived once again as the fourth installation hit the gaming stores around the world.

Published under the widely reputed franchise of Square Enix, Thief 2014 was released on various platforms including Microsoft Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One with different scheduled dates over separate continents.

The vintage series was always considered as a revolutionary concept since its first release and has laid the foundation for modern games of the stealth genre with Assassins Creed being the most notable of many.

Game details and Features:

Set in a dark world of fantasy with a gothic themed environment serving as the background, Garret serves as the main protagonist of the game. A master thief in nature, he was first introduced in the 1998 project titled Thief: The Dark Project. The ‘not so Robin Hood’ character intends to steal from the rich with the utilization of sleek tactics instead of open fighting . The violent aspect of the game is minimal and is similar to its predecessors.

The game play which brings a change from its previous versions is a switch between first person and third person view. It is choice driven with the player’s approach deciding a single outcome out of several possible ones. The character is geared up with several equipments including a black jack which can be used for both combat and non-lethal purposes such as distracting guards and a claw used for grappling.

Game Review :

The game has received mixed to positive feedback from critics and gamers alike. While the stealth aspect along with the graphics and environmental design has been appreciated, the lack of storyline and other technical issues has generated a negative reception from many.

Perhaps the lack of variety or creativity in Garrett’s choice of weapons coupled with the poorly designed and cumbersome layout of the City and super natural branded story has worked against it. If you go in expecting the game to be a solely stealth game or a remake of the original, you will probably be disappointed. The three major strengths of past Thief titles – wide open mission design, sound propagation and narrative – are this game’s biggest weaknesses. That is a fundamental problem it cannot hope to overcome.

Overall, the positive aspects identified by the critics who admired the game were sneaking, toggling the difficulty settings, the new sprinting ability and atmosphere.
