In an exclusive interview to us, Jenson Button talks about the importance of Driver’s Morale, and why a driver cannot be negative, despite finishing 9th or 10th in race. Jenson Button talks about the new regulations, and how that made the people in the factory excited, and work hard for 2014.

Q1) As one of the most experienced driver on the grid, what role can you play, in terms of morale, to get McLaren to the top? Because driver’s views matter a lot…

A1) Yeah, I mean, Team principal is obviously the most important person in the team, in terms of having the right people underneath him working, and trying to boost the morale. But the drivers are the guys that the team see on TV, doing interviews about the car, and how the car is, and the way the team is going. So, Yes, Of course, it is important for the drivers to be positive and show that he is dedicated, even though it is a difficult season, and he is going to give the maximum, no matter what happens. I think that really helps the guys working in the factory. We have two floors underneath the MTC that won’t see the light of the day unless it’s tea break or lunch time or when they go home, which is probably dark as well. So these guys need to know that we are fully focused, and also it’s important for them to realize how important their job is, every single individual in the factory. If one of them doesn’t do their job correctly, we are not going to win Grands Prix. So, it’s important that they stay focused. I think having the new regulations come in, really, its something that helped us a lot after a difficult year, because they are all so excited about the new challenge.

Q2) But you can be negative as well, as Fernando Alonso said that on his b’day that he likes ‘’someone else’s car’’.

A2) That doesn’t normally help morale. Sometimes, We get frustrated about situations, and some of us should know better. When you get out of the car and finish 9th or 10th, one and a half minute behind the leader, that hurts a lot. But you gotta understand that you have to be professional and the heart says one thing, and the mind says the other, and it’s about controlling.
