F1 2014 runs on Ego Engine 3.0, developed by Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment. This game features all the team and driver line-ups from this 2014 season, the turbo charged cars and also two new circuits, Red Bull Ring, Austria and the Sochi Autodrom, Russia. And for the first time, Bahrain circuit will be a night race, with the transition from day to night included. The overall graphics of the game have been improved from last year and the user interface are still the same like F1 2013. Announcing in their official Codemasters blog, the game’s creative director Steve Hood said:

This is the year it all changes - for the sport and for the game. There’s been a dramatic shift in the sport; the largest shake up in the rules and regulations for a very long time and the new power units provide a very different kind of challenge, for both driver and team. By delivering all of these changes, F1 2014 will make for an exciting and refreshingly different experience.

The game’s control have been tweaked and includes refined handling on a pad, which now provides a better level of control for players. The game developers have introduced a new feature called “Driver Evaluation Test” that helps in assisting the player to choose the appropriate game settings based upon his skill level. They have also added a new ‘Very Easy’ setting in this game stating that the game is intended to reach the players from novice to a seasoned pro. He said:

Additionally, with the new driver evaluation system analysing each player's skill level and suggesting appropriate game settings, plus re-graded difficulty levels including a brand new Very Easy setting, we aim to deliver a thoroughly rewarding F1 experience for players of all abilities, from the novice to the seasoned pro.

Gameplay

The overall gameplay haven’t been changed but some tweaks and updates have been made to give the players an improved overall gameplay experience. The refined career mode includes addition of two new circuits and the comeback of Hockenheim circuit. The game allows the player to choose any team to drive in the career mode and unlike previous titles doesn’t allow the player to start form the lower club and work their way up to a big club. The developers have made slight changes to the career mode allowing the players to choose from three different season lengths:

  • Easy mode consists of only 7 races,
  • Medium mode consisting of 12 races, and
  • Hard mode with the full 19 races.

F1 2014 doesn’t feature the Classic content, which allowed the players to experience the historic tracks and Formula One cars. The developers have announced that they have expanded the scenario mode, which now features challenging scenarios based on both real world challenges and events that have happened in the recent past. Players can experience the tyre wear, temparature management, fuel concerns, changeable weather conditions among other scenarios in this mode.

This game introduces the new ERS (Electronic Recovery System) which is the successor to KERS, that allows a boost of 160bhp for around 33 seconds which gives drivers hugely improved opportunities for over taking in the straights.

Steve Hood also mentioned that the new F1 game for next gen consoles will be released in 2015 and will mark a huge step forward for the series and the developers intends to release content updates digitally. He said:

Our [2015] title for the new generation formats will mark a huge step forward for the F1 series. We want to be out there earlier in the season and deliver content updates digitally as the season progresses; it’s very exciting for the series and our players
