FIA explains the provisions for standing restarts

Safety cars will be deployed to check the safety measurements

Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has laid out a detailed information on rules and regulations pertaining to the introduction of safety cars, considered to be one of the most controversial and condemned changes ringed in by the sport’s largest parent body.

According to FIA, the new rules related to standing the start has been modelled keeping in mind the safety of the drivers. According to the regulations laid out, the procedures will remain the same where the standing starts will begin only after safety cars will be deployed until the back markers unlap and move to the rear of the field.

The race director will call for a safety car after he feels it is safe enough to do so. A notification stating,’a safety car in this lap’ will be displayed on the official notice system. The pit exits will turn red after the safety cars have pulled into the pits and carry for another lap. The color will continue to be red until whole field has passed the end of the pitlane.

The team personnel who generally sit on the rear will now move to the safety of garages with the exception of only two people from each team allowed near the rear. The drivers will then proceed to their respective positions to commence their race, and the normal five-light starting system which is used to begin the race will thus follow.

Though under certain circumstances, a race director may have the power of not allowing the use of a standing start after the use of a safety car. The situation will come into play if the safety car has to be deployed within two laps or if there are less than five laps remaining.

The race director can also ask the cars not to go for forming of the cars on the grid if he feels that the conditions are not suitable for standing starts. Under those circumstances, the rolling of safety cars will restart.

FIA’s new rule also states that there wouldn't be any need of standing starts if the race begins under safety conditions.
