There has been a lot of buzz regarding the Formula One 2010 season this year on the circuit. The top position of the driver’s championships has frequently changed and so has the constructor’s title. Amongst the entire buzz Formula One along with its governing body FIA is trying to cut the emission, fuel consumption and working on various other environmental related issues. In the process of doing so we have seen cars not being allowed to refuel during pit stops. Continuing the trend they have come up with a new announcement regarding going green.

According to a press release by FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile), the governing body of the Formula One Championships on 30th June 2010

“The FIA welcomes today’s announcement of the Formula One teams’ carbon calculation and reduction programme.

The calculation is entirely consistent with the recommendations made by the FIA Environmentally Sustainable Motor Sport Commission, importantly encompassing the complete supply chain of activities. The programme highlights the important role that new technologies will play in reducing emissions over the coming years and the leadership role of our sport in developing efficiency solutions for the wider automobile sector.

The FIA is committed to furthering motor sport’s environmental relevance and to this end is developing a number of environmental working groups relating to issues such as power-train development, facility construction, and noise management.”

In accordance to the statement released by FIA, the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) says that over the next three years they will want the carbon emission because of the races and testing by the cars should decrease significantly. This comes ahead of planned rule changes which it is hoped will further enhance the fuel efficiency of cars.

FIA had started thinking more seriously on going green from 2007 where in it brought out various significant changes aerodynamically and regarding the structural aspects of the car. Even the pressure from the sponsors in getting them associated with the ‘go green’ thing is making the car companies do more research into this aspect.

According to a statement from Formula One’s official site FOTA’s chairman, McLaren team Principal Martin Whitmarsh, F1′s resource restriction agreement, announced last year, was already having an effect on reducing emissions. However, he added that teams and motor sport’s governing body were also working on new rules for the 2013 season which would see more fuel efficient engines and drivetrains. They are estimating a reduction of 12.4% emission from 2009 in 2013.

He also added that from 2013 FIA and FOTA will ensure that all the engines and powertrains that will be used by then will be accordance to the technology developed by them to cut of the fuel consumption and also the emissions thus making them more efficient.

It is very good to see that Formula One is taking steps in reducing the power emissions and fuel consumptions. Though they are going on slowly they will surely pick up the speed and will be an example for the others.

The report and various possible changes will be detailed in the next article.
