Jenson Button and Mercedes GP saga

Jenson Button

In the past few weeks there were rumors that Jenson Button was having an issue with his former team now Mercedes GP. It has been found out that in reference to a clause in his contract which promised him a Brawn F1 car a lawsuit has been filed against Mercedes GP involving legal action.

There were rumors surfacing that a possible multi million pound lawsuit was filed against the Mercedes GP by Jenson which was then thought that it was something related to the driver’s contract with the Brawn GP. Sources also spread the news that Brawn GP had promised the British driver shares before the Richard Branson outfit was bought out by the German company Mercedes in the end of 2009.

But after looking into the pending cases there was only one formula one related case and that was Force India’s allegation over Lotus that they copied their wind-tunnel model. But the reasons have now been cleared and Button sued Brawn GP as they promised him a championship winning F1 car.

According to a statement written by the driver’s company JB Next BV, his contract with Brawn contained the clause: “In the event that the Driver wins the Driver Championship at any time during the term, the Company shall transfer ownership of one chassis of the type driven by the driver during that winning season.”After a written statement to the Mercedes GP by Button he got an email from them saying “We have no spare 2009 chassis as limited quantities were manufactured for the 2009 season for cost reasons, we can therefore arrange for a chassis of the type driven by Jenson during the 2009 season in line with the terms of the contract to be manufactured during the factory shutdown in July as we currently are busy working on the 2010 car.”

But he insists that if a ‘replica’ is given instead it would not have the same ‘special and unique’ value of one of the cars which he had driven of Brawn GP while winning the Driver’s Championship of 2009 season and Brawn had won the Constructor’s Title the same year. The Mercedes on other hand to avoid any possibility of going around the courts has finally come to an agreement with Button to a new deal which will see the Brit take home a Brawn BGP 001 worth about £1m ending the issue without any further legal proceedings.

It has been reported that during the buyout of Brawn GP by Mercedes, Ross Brawn is reportedly received a £24.1m payout for his 54% share of the team, while Nick Fry got £13.8m for his 31%.The clause of transferring the ownership of the car to the driver is believed to have been put as there was a pay-cut to Button which was agreed by him due to a financial crisis, the salary being nearly halved.

Probably he might want to show the engine to McLaren so that they can find out something useful out of it or do the McLaren have any hand behind this whole thing? We will never know unless there is any leak. Let us hope that McLaren have learnt their lessons from the Ferrari saga and they will not repeat the feat again.
