Jenson Button wins Hermosa Beach Triathlon ahead of United States Grand Prix

It is widely known that 2009 World Champion Jenson Button is a fitness fanatic. The Briton, a keen cyclist, is in the United States ahead of this weekend’s United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and took part in the Hermosa Beach Triathlon in Los Angeles, California.

The triathlon, which consisted of a 1/4 mile ocean swim, a 10 mile bike run consisting of three laps of a 3.3 mile rolling loop, and a 3 mile run, is a strong test of the endurance of any athlete– let alone a successful Formula One driver. Button finished with a time of 48 minutes and 25 seconds; a whopping 4 minutes 17 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

35-year-old Button, the most experienced driver on the current F1 grid, has not had much success in the 2015 season, with only 3 points finishes in 15 races so far and 5 retirements. His teammate, double world champion Fernando Alonso, has had similarly bad luck this year, with both drivers facing several issues with the Honda engines they switched to this season after splitting from previous manufacturers Mercedes.

This is not the first time Button has run competitively, and it won’t be the last. The driver took part in the London Marathon earlier this year, finishing the 42k full marathon in 2:52:30 and aiming to raise money for his own trust, which he runs with Cancer Research UK to raise money towards the cause.

Teammate Alonso is also a keen cyclist, and has been described as being at a nearly elite level in the sport; the pair are among the fittest on the current circuit.

This weekend will see drivers move to Texas for the US Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes is the reigning champion.
