2015 Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes AMG Petronas, who sealed his 3rd title at the United States Grand Prix, has revealed on his Instagram page that he was involved in a road accident in Monaco, where the Briton resides.

Several media outlets had earlier reported that Hamilton’s participation at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend was in jeopardy, leading to speculation that Mercedes reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein would take his spot for the weekend alongside Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton has now confirmed that he will in fact be racing at the Autodromo Carlos Pace – formerly known as Interlagos – a track Hamilton is yet to win at, despite having driven 8 grands prix there.

The home race for two current drivers – Felipe Massa of Williams and Sauber’s Felipe Nasr, it has also been the home for several of F1’s most iconic names, among them Hamilton’s idol Ayrton Senna, who was himself 8 years into his Formula One career before notching a win at the track where he first began karting.

“Nobody was hurt, which is the most important thing. But the car was obviously damaged and I made very light contact with a stationary vehicle,” he said in the post, while also taking a dig at what he described as opportunists who were looking to “take advantage of the situation and make a quick buck,” Hamilton said.

The 29-year-old confirmed he would be part of the proceedings in Sao Paulo, but on advice from his doctors would arrive there “a day later.”

Rosberg is the reigning champion at the circuit after winning last year’s race from pole.
