The first ever Formula 1 qualifying session in Russia was quite unusual with tyres holding on for more than one flying lap. In the end, Lewis Hamilton edged Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg to take his seventh pole of the season. Valtteri Bottas looked set to upset the Mercedes party until he went wide on the final corner and had to accept third place on the grid. McLarens continued their impressive form at Sochi with Button locking fourth spot on the grid and Magnussen sixth quickest in FP3. The latter, however, will drop five places for a gearbox change.
