1020 fake FIFA World Cup trophies have been seized in a warehouse in the city of Yiwu, Zhejiang province by Chinese customs officials.

According to the Daily Mail, the customs officials in China have ramped up their checks in recent times to stop football-related copyright theft as the merchandising for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil later this year is expected to rake in millions of dollars.

The fake trophies, which resembled the actual one from a distance, were expected to be exported to Libya.

A report mentioned that the fake Cups are a shiny gold colour just like the official replicas. It also added that England’s name does not appear on the fake trophies as it is engraved on the old Jules Rimet World Cup after the victory at Wembley in 1966.

This is the second such raid in China with officials seizing 1,008 fake trophies and 1,648 fake Brazil World Cup jerseys from the city of Xiamen just a few days back.
