118th IFA Shield: East Bengal score late to win 2-0 over Geylang International FC

Two late strikes, the first one by youngster Semeilen Doungel and the latter by Chidi Edeh enabled East Bengal Club to beat Singapore’s Geylang International FC 2-0 and maintain their unbeaten record against them in three matches between the two teams. With the three points East Bengal moved to four points from two matches in their Group I in the 118th IFA Shield.

Incidentally the teams had earlier clashed in the inaugural AFC Cup in 2004 with the red-and-golds winning the first match in Singapore 3-2 while the return-leg in Kolkata had ended in a 1-1 draw.

East Bengal dominated the proceedings in the first session and should have rapped up the game in this half itself, but it was goalless at the break. After the breather the visitors tried to come back into the match but a master stroke by East Bengal coach Armando Colaco to bring on Semeilen Doungel in place of Shylo Malsawm Tulunga had instant effect.

Nine minutes later Semeilen Doungel trapped a pass from Subodh Kumar in the midfield, ran down the field hoodwinking a couple of rival defenders and he scored with an angular shot. Len almost got his name in the scoresheet again when his header narrowly missed the mark, but Chidi Edeh made amends for his earlier misses when he doubled the tally in injury-time off a pass from another substitute Cavin Lobo.
