Still challenging at the top of the Premier League is Arsenal FC. After season upon season finishing at the bottom of the top four, they now sit at the pinnacle. Inspired by the likes of Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and a solid back four that Steve Bould can be proud of (ish), they could finally end that 9 year wait for a trophy.
And the plethora of North London stars won’t be finished there. With the World Cup just a few months away, the excitement is building and some of Arsenal’s key men will strive to impress long into the summer. With that in mind, we take a look at five of Wenger’s best who are set to shine in Rio.
Mesut Ozil
It would be impossible not to begin with this man. He’s lifted an entire Arsenal side low on confidence and transformed them into genuine title contenders; having provided vital contributions along the way. He’s scored five goals and made nine assists so far this season and is already an instrumental figure in the German side.
Per Mertesacker
Instrumental to his compatriot winning a medal could well be the form of German stopper Per Mertesacker. The central defender has been a crucial part in Arsenal only conceding 26 in the league this season and 95 caps also means his experience is imperative in a group that contains Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, the United States and Ghana.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Although only recebtly returned from injury Oxlade-Chamberlain has already he showcased wat he can do in the home game against Palace then he may well be on the plane with Roy Hodgson and the three lions to Brazil. With Theo Walcott ruled out of the world cup bid, England are a little short in the wide areas and Oxlade-Chamberlain could prove to be a vital weapon having already scored against the host nation in a friendly last year at the Maracana.
Olivier Giroud
Giroud has bagged 12 goals for Arsenal this season and is the clubs top scorer. His physical ability is well known and his strength could prove valuable in the difficult Brazilian climate. The Frenchman has just 26 caps for his country, but after an impressive season so far, he could lead the line for Les Bleus alongside Karim Benzema.
Jack Wilshere
Whilst Jack Wilshere’s place in Roy Hodgon’s side isn’t exactly guaranteed, with the Likes of Gerard, Barkley and Lampard all in contention for a midfield spot, should he finish the season well with the Gunners, you wouldn’t back against him breaking into the team.
The 22-year-old has been plagued with injury but has come back from his latest knock and found sparkling form. Alongside his supreme technical ability, Wilshire could be a key man for England if they are going to make it through a tricky group stage which includes Italy and Uruguay.
