One of the three newly acquired players by I-League champions Dempo is Goa’s very own Godwin Franco. Godwin played the 2009-10 season with Pune FC as a mid-fielder. Godwin was also a part of the Indian Under-19 team in 2003 and was part of the Indian team camp for the AFC Under-23 Challenge Cup earlier this year.

Q: What is your usual playing position and when playing position for Pune FC?

Godwin: Central Midfielder

Q: When did you start playing football…?

Godwin: I started playing football when I was a kid, football is in the family.

Q: Where did you play football as a youngster (Any academy etc?)

Godwin: I am a product of the Sesa Football Academy.  Before that I played for Assagao Anjuna Football Academy.  I played at the U-16, U-19, U-21 for Goa regularly. I captained Goa at the U-21 level, played for India U-19 and India U-21 at Lusophony games (games for athletes from Portuguese speaking countries) in Macau.

Q: Clubs/Teams played for so far…

Godwin: Churchill Brothers SC 2 seasons, Fransa Pax FC 1 season, Sporting Clube de Goa 3 seasons, Pune FC 1 season (all ILeague teams) and  now I am with Dempo SC.  I started playing professionally at the age of 18, starting from the Sesa football academy.

Q: People, Sports persons & Teams that you admire a lot or are fans of

Godwin: Zinadine Zidane and Xavi Hernandez, FC Barcelona and Brazilian national team.

Godwin: Pasta with Chicken

Godwin: For me every moment is important and I cherish each and every bit of it.

Q: Any tough phase in your career…?

Godwin: There is no sad moment for me as GOD gives the best

Q: Your football related aims…

Godwin: Play regularly for my country India and win titles and play regularly for my club Dempo and win titles.

Q: Favourite sport other than football?

Godwin: Swimming…

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

Godwin: Swimming, listening to music.

Q: Any superstitions before or during a game

Godwin: I believe in GOD.

Q: Your favourite place where you like to play (stadium or city)

Godwin: Nehru stadium in Fatorda and Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata.

Q: Who do you credit for the most for being what you are today?

Godwin: GOD

Q: What did you think is your strength as a player?

Godwin: Apart from my original centre midfield position I can play in different positions. Technically and tactically sound. Play with both my feet .

Q: If you were not a footballer, what would you have been?

Godwin: For me it’s always been playing football, as a kid that has been my only ambition.
