Russell Brand, an English comedian and actor, donated to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign with money he received from The Sun after winning a case against them.

The paper had previously run a news report stating that Brand had cheated on his girlfriend Jemima Khan with a model.

On April 15, the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives, Brand contacted Sheila Coleman from the Hillsborough Justice Campaign (HJC) to tell them of his motives.

He informed her that he wanted to donate the money he received in damages to the HJC after he was “inspired by the “courage and tenacity” of the campaigners.

The Sun had famously insulted the dead fans in a scathing news report that stated that drunken fans were to be blamed for the disaster, a claim that has since been proved wrong by a report. It was a news report that led to people in Liverpool discarding their subscriptions to The Sun and even implored others not to buy the newspaper.

Sheila said: “The HJC appreciates the gesture made by Russell and that he made it on the anniversary.”

The exact amount of the donation is not known. Brand had announced his donation to HJC on Twitter yesterday.
