Aguero to move back to Argentina once his contract with City expires

Aguero will see out his contract with Manchester City

Manchester City’s star striker Sergio Aguero has said that he will leave the Manchester-based club in 2019 after his contract expires and will move to his childhood club Atlético Independiente.

The Argentine spent nine years at the Avellaneda-based club from 1997 to 2006 and scored 23 goals in 56 appearances for the first team before moving to Atletico Madrid.

In an interview with French football magazine So Foot, Aguero said: “I have always said that I want to return to Independiente and I will do just that. I will return to Independiente when my contract with City expires.”

The 27-year old has four years left on his contract and he feels that he wants to return to Independiente at a point where he can still offer a lot to the club and the level at which he is performing right now, he might as well go on to score tons of goals in the Argentine Primera division.

"I do not want to make my comeback when I am too old. If everything goes well, I will return to the club of my heart at the age of 31."

Carlos Tevez also moved to his boyhood club Boca Juniors while playing in prime form and Aguero might follow his footsteps.

Aguero is in the prime of his career

Aguero has scored 85 goals for the Sky Blues in the Premier League in a total 112 appearances. The striker is the joint highest goal scorer for City this season in all competitions with nine goals, Kevin De Bruyne has scored the same amount of goals but has played four more matches than the Argentine.

The striker recently returned from injury against Liverpool, a match which City lost 4-1 but Aguero did get on the scoresheet. He limped off from the field in the next match against Southampton, but the manager, Manuel Pellegrini termed the injury as nothing serious.

The Citizens might be gutted to hear that their beloved striker will not sign a contract extension, however, the fact that he has vowed to stay at the club as long as his contract bounds him to, might give them a sigh of relief as a player of his stature is bound to attract interest from European powerhouses like Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Real Madrid might be considered as the club who will want to snatch the striker from City, as Benzema’s ongoing legal situation has raised questions on his football career and if the Los Blancos are forced to let go of the Frenchman then Aguero might be the most viable and perfect option to replace him.
