Aitor Karanka leaves Real Madrid

Aitor Karanka has left Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho’s former assistant manager Aitor Karanka has now been relieved of his duties at Real Madrid by mutual consent between him and the club president, Florentino Perez.

The decision was inevitable as current coach Carlo Ancelotti announced two weeks ago that former Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane would be his new assistant, and Aitor did not want a non-coaching role at the club.

Karanka was approached by Jose Mourinho, who asked the former to join Chelsea along with him.

“Mourinho wanted me to go with him to Chelsea,” explained Karanka. “But there was also the option of staying. I have a great relationship with Florentino Perez so we will sit down and talk and see what happens.”

It has been suggested that Karanka is now in search for his first managerial job and Dubai-based club Al Ahli could approach him, after Spanish manager Quique Sanchez Flores stepped down last month.
