Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal would not sign a Tottenham player

The rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham is one fraught with history and mutual dislike and Arsene Wenger characterised this his pre-game press conference when he was asked if the club would consider signing Harry Kane. The Gunners boss acknowledged the striker’s talent, but said Arsenal would not sign a player from Tottenham, ESPN reported.

Having lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Wenger’s boys will hope to turn it around quickly against a possibly fatigued Spurs side who played their Europa League match last night and registered a win. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have done well to rise up the Premier League table this season despite issues in the striking department that now look to have solved themselves with Harry Kane firing again.

Wenger was questioned about potentially considering Kane as a future Arsenal player and his response was one that typified the rivalry between the two. Le Professeur said: “He has great qualities and he will make a great career. But once a player is at Spurs you don't even consider him any more.”

The only player to move directly from White Hart Lane to Arsenal was Sol Campbell and he faced the fans’ wrath for it, however, he wasn’t bought by Wenger’s side, he moved on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract.

However, it doesn’t appear at the moment that Arsenal need any reinforcement given the way they are now progressing in the league. Wenger believes it’s too early to predict the title race but stressed that consistency will be the key for them.

ESPN reported Arsene Wenger's musings from the press conference, he said: “It is too early. We want to be in the fight and will do absolutely everything to do it. With five or six games to go then maybe. I think we have a chance, but it's down to consistency.”

Petr Cech one of Premier League’s greatest

From Arsenal’s midweek loss, there were few positives for the English side, one of them was Petr Cech, despite his side conceding 5 goals. The list time he let that many in was against Arsenal while playing for Chelsea in another London derby.

Speaking about his new acquisition from the Blues, Wenger spoke about his belief that Cech will go down as one of the greatest the English game has seen. He said: “ I believe there is no coincidence. It's just class, consistency and quality. And knowing him well after a few months I am not surprised. He analyses everything.

“He is gifted, super-talented and he is one of the greatest goalkeepers ever seen in this country. He plays in a position where age is less of a restriction than in any other job. I think 37 or 38. Some go longer but once you start to have a 'four' the intensity is more difficult. Van der Sar was close to 40 and still doing well.”

On signing Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo

From an excerpt of Guillem Balague’s upcoming book on the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, it became public that Arsenal were close to signing the now Real Madrid hero but did not seal the deal in time and Manchester United swooped.

However, according to the Mirror, when Wenger was asked if he would sign the 30-year-old now or his arch rival Lionel Messi, Wenger replied: “He (Ronaldo) is the best player in the world - with Messi. Messi has a little advantage on assists. But I would go for nobody because it is not my problem at the moment.”
