Arsenal's injury crisis deepens as goalkeeper David Ospina ruled out of Anderlecht tie

David Ospina ruled out of Wednesday’s CL tie against Anderlecht

Arsenal’s injury crisis sees no sign of ending anytime soon with Colombian goalkeeper and summer recruit David Ospina ruled out of Arsenal’s Champions League trip to Anderlecht.

Ospina was in line to make his first UCL start for Arsenal against the Belgians on Wednesday following Wojciech Szczesny’s suspension as a result of being sent off during the Galatasaray tie.

But his injury now means that he will have to wait a bit longer for his first European start, leaving Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger no option but to throw in 22-year-old third choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Although Ospina is not expected to be out for long, he does join Mesut Ozil (knee), Olivier Giroud (foot) and Mathieu Debuchy (ankle) among others in the club’s currently long injured list.

Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta set to return

But it is not all doom and gloom for Wenger with the midfield duo of Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey fit to start against Anderlecht.

Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere’s injury is not as serious as initially thought after limping off in the 2-2 draw against Hull City in the Premier League last weekend.

“He got a kick on his knee. It’s not a concern, it’s not twisted or anything,” Wenger said of Wilshere coming off early against Hull.

Strong response needed against Anderlecht: Wenger

The Frenchman hopes that they can bounce back strongly after a disappointing result to Hull at the weekend, which has seen the Gunners already fall 11 points behind league-leaders Chelsea.

“We have to focus on the next game, football is made of pragmatism and realism and let’s focus on Anderlecht and go on and win the game,” Wenger said.

“It’s a shame we didn’t win against Hull, but it’s a shame because there is a good spirit in the side and a lot of quality in there. And I think the way we concede goals at the moment is too easy.”
