Arsene Wenger: Aaron Ramsey out for busy Christmas period

West Ham United v Arsenal - Premier League

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey looks set for a spell on the sidelines, having limped out of the side’s Boxing Day win over West Ham with injury. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted in his post match press conference that he did not know how long the Welsh midfielder would be out for. However Wenger did tell the BBC that he expects to be without Ramsey for the rest of the festive period.

Ramsey sustained a suspected torn thigh muscle in the 64th minute of Arsenal’s 3-1 Boxing Day victory over West Ham, and Wenger admitted that he is not expecting to have him back for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle.

“It looks like a thigh strain. For me, I don’t know how serious the thigh strain is but the Christmas period is certainly over for him. It was his birthday today.”

“I don’t know how long it will be. We will have to see tomorrow morning. He knew straight away, but we have to see,” said Wenger.

The midfielder himself took to Twitter to talk of his disappointment, saying that he was “gutted” to come off and was yet to find out how bad the injury is.

Ramsey has been a revelation in midfield for Wenger’s side this season, and has been Arsenal’s stand out player. He is the club’s top scorer, with eight Premier League goals, and has also provided six league assists.

Ramsey’s injury is the latest in a string of injuries to key players for Arsenal this season, but does come at a time when the injury crisis is abating. Lukas Podolski made a goal scoring return to the side as a replacement for Ramsey at Upton Park, whilst Theo Walcott has also returned to the Gunners midfield. Abou Diaby and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain injured for Arsenal, who could turn to England midfielder Jack Wilshere to take Ramsey’s central midfield role.
