Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he does not regret not re-signing Cesc Fabregas.

The Spanish international spent eight seasons at the North London club before moving back to his boyhood club Barcelona in the summer of 2011.

But the midfielder endured a torrid time in spite of some decent performances and was eventually forced to leave the Catalan club this summer after a three-year spell. The 27-year-old looked to return to the Gunners who had the first refusal rights to sign him if Barcelona were to sell him.

But Wenger declined the opportunity having already signed Mesut Ozil the previous summer and only approached Barcelona to sign Alexis Sanchez this summer.

Wenger: Only regret is Fabregas left Arsenal

When asked about Fabregas, he said: “Yes it was strange to see him in Chelsea shirt.

“You have to accept that professional players move from club to club and it was difficult for me to see him leave us. Once he has left us you accept the idea he can move to some different clubs.”

“Of course it was a bit strange but he had a good game.

When asked if he had any regrets, he said: “I have no regrets that Fabregas [joined Chelsea]. My only regret is that he left us in the first place.”

Chelsea eventually stepped in and signed the midfielder who already has a wealth of experience in the EPL and already has two assists from the Blues’ opening game win over Burnley.

Wenger not making any signings at the moment

Wenger also revealed that at the moment, he is not close to signing any players. But with the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, he could sign another centre-back in spite of having signed Calum Chambers from Southampton.

“We are not in an emergency case but we are open to any opportunity to strengthen our defensive department.”

The Gunners squad will see reinforcements when the German World Cup winning trio of Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski return after a lengthy break.
