Liverpool look set to win the race for Atletico Madrid’s young left-back Javier Manquillo, according to reports.

The Spain U-20 international has been linked heavily with Arsenal in recent times. However, it now looks as if Brendan Rodgers will be able to lure the youngster to Anfield on a loan deal, with a view to sign the Spaniard on a permanent deal.

Manquillo has been on the lookout for regular football after appearing just three times for Atletico Madrid last season.

Even after the departure of Felipe Luis to Chelsea the left-back spot still seems to be crowded at the Vicente Calderón with Emiliano Insúa favourite to claim the spot.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will like to shore up the left side of the defence, which has been the cause of some discomfort for them last season. With Jose Enrique out frequently due to injuries and Andre Wisdom and Jon Flanaggan also inexperienced at the position, Rodgers has often had to resort to playing Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson on that side of the field as a cover up.

If the deal goes through, this could be Liverpool’s third significant capture this week. Loic Remy and Divock Origi are also set to be announced as Liverpool players after the duo flew out to Boston to complete their medical prior to an official announcement.

Liverpool have already bagged four players this summer with the captures of Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.
