A portion of the FC Barcelona fans displayed their disgust at the Camp Nou on Sunday night by waving white handkerchiefs during the Barcelona vs Althletic Bilbao encounter.

After suffering three successive defeats, FC Barcelona finally ended their loosing run by edging past Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at home.

After exiting from the Champions League and losing the Copa Del Rey final, Pedro and Messi completed a comeback to give a slender chance to regain the La Liga title.

But a section of the supporters in the stands were clearly stuck in a hangover of their previous defeats as they expressed their frustrations by waving white handkerchiefs during the match which is seen as a traditional way of indicating surrender without putting up a fight.

The second half started with Bilbao drawing first blood as Aduriz struck for the Basques to make it 1-0 in their favour. Just seconds after the goal had been scored, a bunch of the Catalan faithful took out their handkerchiefs and waved it to show pass their message of disapproval against a team which was enduring their worst season in recent years.

What followed then was even more degrading as a particular set of players were targeted by the supporters.

Lionel Messi, Dani Alves and Cesc Fabreagas have been criticised in recent weeks due to their below par performances in the last three defeats. The crowd didn’t spare the Brazilian right back as he was jeered every time he touched the ball.

Messi, who has been accused for his inferior work rate, was having another tough night as the Argentine missed a few chances including a one-on-one against Bilbao keeper Gorka Iraizoz. After that moment, shocking boos were heard around the Camp Nou every time the little man was on the ball.

Cesc Fabreagas came on as a substitute in the 70th minute of the second half replacing Xavi Hernandez. But the Spaniard was unpleasantly greeted by the fans who voiced their discontentment against manager Tata Martino’s decision.

Barcelona came from behind to win the match with Messi’s free kick deciding the encounter. The victory surely gives a breathing space but whether the scars of defeat will heal sooner in Catalonia remains to be seen.
