Spanish giants Barcelona had to pay €13.5 million (£11.2 million) to the Spanish tax authorities after they were charged with tax fraud in the signing of Brazil forward Neymar.

The Spanish champions opined they had not committed any crime and the payment had been made due to misinterpretation of the amount they had to pay to Santos.

Barcelona paid €13,550,830.56 to be exact.

As per The Guardian, a club statement read: “The aim is to cover eventual interpretations that could be given to the contracts drawn up in the operation to sign Neymar.”

It is still not clear if the payment made would mean the club would be free of all charges made by the Madrid court. A club member had lodged a complaint against President Sandro Rosell alleging misappropriation of funds. Later Sandro Rosell resigned from his post as President saying he wanted to clear his name and protect the club’s image.

After the president’s resignation, Barcelona had admitted that the Neymar deal had actually cost them €86.2 million, including payments to the player and his family. Earlier in summer the club had claimed that the deal was worth €57.1 million.
