Andre Gomes is one of the few players in the world to have played with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese international took some time to reflect on the experience of playing with two of the greatest players of our generation. The Barcelona midfielder could not stop praising the Argentine maestro’s skill and brilliance in practice.
The Portugal international joined Barcelona in the summer transfer window for a huge sum of €55 million and Gomes has been left stunned with Lionel Messi’s ‘invention’ and creativity in training.
Andre Gomes spoke about his astonishment at the ability of Lionel Messi to conjure something miraculous out of nothing in training every day. Speaking to L'Esportiu de Catalunya, the Portuguese midfielder said:
"Everyone knows that Messi is very, very good. He does things in games that you cannot explain; he just knows different things and can do it.
"In training it is a show, because every day he can invent something new. You think you're used to it, but there is always one day you go to the dressing room surprised by something he has done."
When asked about how he compared Lionel Messi to his international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Gomes refused to be drawn into the debate saying:
"I think they are different players, the two best players in the world in recent years," he added. "I do not like to say which one I think is better.
"What I like to say now is that I'm the only player who has Messi and Cristiano as team-mates and I enjoy playing with both."
Currently the only active player in the world who is playing with Messi and Ronaldo, Gomes should really consider himself lucky to have the opportunity of playing with the two legends.
The Portuguese star was the biggest signing made by Barcelona this season, but he has found opportunities hard to come by in the star-studded Barcelona team. However, now with Ivan Rakitic injured, the Barcelona midfielder will be looking to make the most of his opportunities.
