Lionel Messi with the UEFA Best Player of the Year award

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has credited his club team mates as the reason behind his audacious performances last season, thanking them for allowing him to shine for his side.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a treble winning season under Luis Enrique and quite deservingly was voted as UEFA Best Player of the Year on Thursday night during which the Champions League draw occurred too. It was the most one-sided outcome ever as Messi who gained 49 votes, beat other two finalists team mate Luis Suarez (3) and Real Madrid adversary Cristiano Ronaldo (2 votes which is the lowest by any player) by a huge margin.

And the Argentine acknowledged the contributions of his able-bodied club mates recognising the fact that they have been instrumental in him displaying some impeccable form last season. Messi scored 58 goals and assisted 27 across all competitions and was a decisive figure for the Catalonia side in the business end of the campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo managed to rack up impressive numbers once again as he scored three more (61) than his Argentine counterpart but failed to get his hands on any major trophy ending the season on a disappointing note collectively.

Here’s Messi’s interview after winning his second Best Player of the Year award.
