Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm has been sidelined for three months after suffering a broken ankle during a team training on Tuesday, the club confirmed on their website.

The 31-year-old defender turned midfielder suffered a fracture to his right ankle as diagnosed by the club’s chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt.

Lahm is one of the few players you would expect to be out injured as this is the first serious injury for Lahm since 2006 when he had suffered a torn ligament in his elbow which kept him out of the World Cup.

Bayern Munich are on top of the table, but the growing injury list will be a worrying issue for head coach Pep Guardiola with players such as Holger Badstuber, Javi Martínez, David Alaba, Thiago and four other players unavailable for selection.

Bayern Munich will be facing Hoffenheim on Saturday before their away Champions League fixture against Premier League champions Manchester City next week.

The club wished Lahm a speedy recovery and a quick return to the game.
