Bayern Munich officially confirm they're close to signing Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels is on his way back to Munich

German giants Bayern Munich have moved a step closer to securing the services of former youth defender Mats Hummels. The Borussia Dortmund captain has been in excellent form the Ruhr club over the past few seasons but could move back to his former club this summer.

Having been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Hummels has reportedly already held talks with the Bavarian giants and could follow the likes of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski in moving to the Allianz Arena.

Speaking to reporters on Monday night, Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said, “if Hummels leaves it will be to join Bayern Munich,” and last night, Bayern Munich's chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, confirmed what his compatriot had said.

“I can pretty much confirm what Mr Watzke said last night and that is that Mats is talking to Bayern," he said.

“But these are talks between three parties and please understand that I cannot go into more detail at this moment.

"We have to respect that he is under contract at the moment (until 2017) and I don’t want to ruin the good relationship we have built up (with Dortmund) with some comments today.”

Bayern Munich could swap Mario Gotze for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are both reportedly interested in swapping Mario Gotze for Mats Hummels. The 23-year-old midfielder joined the Bavarian giants three seasons ago for around €40 million but has since failed to make any sort of progress under Pep Guardiola.

Now, however, the club are ready to offload him back to his former club in the hopes of signing Dortmund's Hummels who could possibly 'complete' the Bayern Munich squad. Hummels was a Bayern Munich youth player but joined Borussia Dortmund for more regular first-team action.

While his return could be celebratory, plenty of Dortmund fans are said to be unhappy with Gotze returning to the club given he left in extremely controversial circumstances and heated moments of outbursts.
