Bayern Munich lost their first match in the Bundesliga since October 2012 as Augsburg defeated them 1-0 today. Sascha Molders scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute to condemn Bayern to their first defeat since Bayer Leverkussen defeated them 2-1 last season.

Bayern rested Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm, Dante and Rafinha completely, as Guardiola clearly indicated that his focus is on the midweek Champions League 2nd leg match against Manchester United.

This loss takes away the sheen off of what has been a brilliant league campaign, where they have completely dominated every opposition. They were looking forward to making it the first unbeaten season in any League for any team across Europe since Arsenal’s invincibles did it in the 2003/04 season. As part of this streak, Bayern Munich were unbeaten for 53 games in the Bundesliga.

Incidentally, this loss also saw them failing to score for the first time in 65 matches. The loss will come as welcome news to both Manchester United and Arsenal; United as they face Bayern on Wednesday in the 2nd leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, and Arsenal as they still remain the only team across all leagues (since the inception of the Premier League) to have gone through an entire season unbeaten.
