Bayern Munich thrash Borussia Dortmund 5-1 at the Allianz Arena

Goals from Gotze, Muller, and Lewandowski help Bayern defeat Dortmund 5-1

The match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich is one of the most heated matches in the Bundesliga, and in recent years has become one of the most watched rivalries around the world. While a lot was expected from both teams it was only Bayern who performed on the day. The 5-1 loss ended up being Dortmund's worst loss in five years, before which they lost with the same score line against the same opponents.

Dortmund who were only four points away from the Bavarians ahead of the game will have a harder time to catch up as the team from Munich are at the top of the table with 24 points from eight games. With this result, they have managed to keep their 100% record in the Bundesliga.

The game also saw Lewandowski keep his spot as the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 12 goals coming from eight games.

Teams

Borussia Dortmund: Burki, Piszczek, Hummels, Bender, Sokratis, Weigl, Gundogan, Castro, Kagawa, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang.

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Thiago, Martinez, Lewandowski, Costa, Alonso, Boateng, Götze, Lahm, Müller, Alaba.

First Half: Muller puts Bayern in the lead

Both teams started the game strong but were unable to get one over each other for the majority of the first half. In the 26th minute though Thomas Muller put his team in the lead after receiving a brilliant pass from Jerome Boateng. The player takes a sublime touch on the ball that puts it past the on-rushing Dortmund goalkeeper. All he had to after that was tap the ball into the back of an empty net.

A few minutes later Dortmund gave away a penalty to Bayern. Muller stepped up to take it and ended up doubling his team’s lead after sending the ball low into the bottom right.

The Dortmund team took a while to recover from the blows they had just been handed, but courtesy of their Gabon striker, Aubameyang, they managed to reduce the goal difference to one goal before half time. The player received a brilliant cross from the right wing and all he had to do was tap it past Manuel Neuer.

Second Half: Robert Lewandowski comes to life

Just as the second half whistle was blown Robert Lewandowski gets on the score sheet after scoring the third goal for Bayern Munich. The goal had a lot of similarities to the first one, as the move was started when Lewandowski received an over the top cross from Boateng. The player manages to get the ball past Burki, who was expecting a shot, and ball was slammed into the back of an open goal.

A few minutes later the Polish striker went on to score a second after Mario Gotze sends a cross from the right wing. The player took a first touch shot and sent the ball past Burki.

Marco Reus and Adnan Januzaj came into the match for Castro and Kagawa but are not able to make a significant impact on the game. Januzaj gets close to reducing the goal difference from a free kick but Manuel Neuer was there to stop it from going in.

Gotze manages to get on the scoresheet himself in the 66th minute after smashing the ball into the left side of the goal, after receiving a backheel pass from Thiago Alcantara at the edge of the penalty box.

Dortmund, after that, seemed to have lost their will to fight and ended up losing the game 5-1.

The team from North Rhine-Westphalia will have to go back and wait till their next meeting with the Bavarians to get even. Bayern, on the other hand, have managed to seal their dominance in the Bundesliga after defeating two of their league rivals with a similar score line.
