Ilkay Gundogan’s contract with Borussia Dortmund expires in the summer of 2016

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will not be extending his contract with the Bundesliga club. Gundogan’s current contract runs till 30 June 2016 after which he will be a free agent.

If Dortmund choose not to sell the German midfielder, he will be free to sign a pre-contract with any club in January 2016. It was the same case with striker Robert Lewandowski who eventually signed a pre-contract with arch rivals Bayern Munich last season.

The 24-year-old hasn’t had the best of periods with the club in the past couple of seasons. He suffered a back injury while on international duty in August 2013 which required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season. But he still signed a new contract in April last year which extended his contract till 2016.

Gundogan has been linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United with Louis van Gaal reportedly interested in signing him this summer. It remains to be seen if Dortmund will sell one of their prized assets this summer or keep him for another year and lose him on a Bosman transfer.
