Borussia Dortmund officially confirm Mats Hummels has asked to rejoin Bayern Munich

Mats Hummels has expressed his desire to rejoin Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed on their official website that their captain and defender Mats Hummels has asked to move back to Bayern Munich in the summer. The 27-year-old had been linked with a move back to his former club as well as with some of Europe's top clubs in recent weeks.

After losing the likes of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski to the Munich club, Hummels looks like he's the third reason signing to switch between the two Bundesliga rivals. Given that he has only one year left on his contract come the end of the season, there isn't a mention of a transfer fee as of yet but it is believed to be in the lower millions.

The report on the website reads, "Defender Mats Hummels Borussia Dortmund has communicated his desire to leave the club in the summer and want to join the league rivals Bayern Munich next season."

"Borussia Dortmund's Board has subsequently decided to make such a change depends on whether Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund will commence a player the extraordinary value corresponding, extremely its value and range. So far, Bayern Munich has not made an offer.

As a precaution, it is pointed out that with Mats Hummels - as at present with all other players from Borussia Dortmund - no exit clause has been agreed and the player is logically tied to June 30, 2017 Borussia Dortmund."

Bayern Munich were on the lookout for a solid centre-back in January as they activated a loan deal for Sardar Tasci. They also sold Dante in the summer to Wolfsburg and their recent acquisition, Mehdi Benatia, has failed to live up to this price tag as well as talent.

With Carlo Ancelotti confirmed as the manager for the Munich club starting next season, Hummels is likely to be the first of many changes the Allianz Arena can see.
