Brazilian striker Wellington, who plays for Concordia Chiajna in the Romanian league, was left in tears after he was racially abused by a section of the fans from Rapid Bucharest.

The striker accused the fans of throwing a banana at him during the 0-0 draw. Television footage also showed the fans insulting him with monkey gestures, apart form uttering racial slurs.

The incident took place in the 59th minute of the game when Wellington was hit by a banana.

Chiajna’s Narcissus R?ducan said that Wellington was “crying in the locker room after a banana was thrown at him.”

Referee booked him for complaining

Wellington told the press: “It’s incredible what happened.

“My wife and my child were in the stands.”

He continued to explain the abuse he got and how the referee Marian Balak did nothing to protect him.

“I’m not a monkey. I told the referee and he gave me a yellow card.

“Those who did that are idiots, and I hope the federation will do something about it.”

Rapid coach: Wellington should have cried for not scoring

Meanwhile, the coach of their opponents Marian Rada made a disturbing statement after the game, claiming Wellington was being dramatic and that there was no racism.

He said: “Was he crying? Don’t you see what’s happening in theatres? Maybe Wellington should have cried because he didn’t score.

“How do we know it was a Rapid fan? Maybe a banana just slipped out of someone’s hand in the stands.”

Romanian police are also on the lookout for a Rapid Bucharest fan who came to the Chiajna stadium with a flag which had Nazi symbols – an offence that could land the culprit in prison for anywhere between six months to five years.
