Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has ruled striker Daniel Sturridge out for their ties against Newcastle United, Real Madrid and Chelsea next week.

The former Chelsea forward has been out of action since August because of a thigh injury he sustained during an international break and was unavailable to Rodgers for the last 11 matches. When asked if there was a chance of him making a comeback against Real Madrid next Tuesday or Chelsea next Saturday, the Liverpool manager told LiverpoolECHO, “No, I don’t think so.”

“We will work with him and hopefully we will get that bit of luck when he comes back,” he added. “We will just see where he’s at with Liverpool over the next 10 days and then we’ll take it from there,” he adds. “But it’s highly unlikely [available for England’s matches against Slovenia and Scotland.]”

“When he comes back hopefully we will have him for the rest of the season. When you have that talent you just have to keep yourself as fit and available as you possibly can.”

Sturridge’s problems may be hereditary

Earlier this Wednesday, Sturridge had suggested that his muscle-woes could be a hereditary problem during an interview with TalkSport, saying, “Maybe it's my body type, maybe it's hereditary.

"Both my uncles had injuries, and my dad had them as well. Maybe it's the Caribbean vibes, maybe I have speed but maybe it makes you more vulnerable because of the fast twitch muscles and the speed in which you're moving,” Sturridge added. "I am vulnerable to muscle injuries. As long as I continue to work hard everything will take care of itself."

When asked about his reaction to Sturridge’s comments, Rodgers said, “I’m not an expert on genetics or medicine so I can’t comment. I can only concentrate on his injury now and what my medical team here, who are fantastic, are telling me. He is just in the middle of recovering and we will see the length of time it takes. All we know is that he had a calf strain on the back of his last injury, and he is working to recover from that.”
