After that, things became real frantic. Mohun Bagan, understandably, trailing the defending champions and arch rivals East Bengal by 2 points were desperate for the three points, made a real go of things. Incidentally, after the fourth official signalled for four extra minutes, Azharuddin seemed to have got the winner, but belatedly the referee's assistant's flag went up which led to the whole Mohun Bagan team running towards the referee and protesting with aplomb.

Prabir Das led the home team into protests and soon things got out of hand, as the Mohun Bagan fans at the stadium joined in. They streamed into the ground, rioting at what the felt was the third disallowed goal of the game. The police had to be deployed to control the crowd from getting to the referee and the opposition.

Mohun Bagan, who started the CFL a bit half-heartedly, only playing their youngsters have since signed Bidemi and Amiri to strengthen the squad after a succession of good results. The club officials who were at the ground, visibly dismayed and disgruntled arrived at the decision as the police tried to maintain peace at the ground.
