Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has come out as another manager who opposes the concept of the Ballon D’Or award. The FIFA Ballon D’Or is an annual award which is a vote-based prize given to the best footballer of the year.

Earlier this year, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had revealed that he was against the concept, saying: “I would not vote for any Ballon d’Or,”

“I’m totally against it. I’m a team lover and a specialist of somebody who loves teamwork.

“I’m completely against it. I would not vote for anybody.”

Cristiano Ronaldo eventually won the 2014 Ballon D’Or and he and Lionel Messi have swept the award in the past seven years, with Messi winning it on four consecutive occasions between 2009 and 2012.

Wenger right to oppose Ballon D’Or: Mourinho

Wenger isn’t the only one who is against the award. Mourinho agreed with the French manager and said: “He is against the Ballon d'Or and I think he's right. In this moment football is losing a little bit the concept of the team to focus more on the individual.”

The Portuguese boss was in agreement that it was a team effort that won trophies and not an individual’s performances.

“For me, football is collective,” Mourinho continued. “The individual is welcome if you want to make our group better. But you have to work for us, not (such that) we have to work for you.

“When the top player arrives, the team is already there. It's not him who comes to discover the team, like Columbus discovering America. No, no, you are coming now to help us be better,” he finished.
